6 Grooming Tips Your Man Needs This Summer

Summertime in Dallas means drinks by a hi-rise pool, road trips to the river in Austin and backyard barbecues with friends. Grooming is probably the last thing on your man’s mind while you’re out having fun in the sun. Unfortunately, due to the intense sun rays and humid conditions that are common in Texas, you’ve probably noticed his damaged skin and hair. However, with a few grooming tips, you can get your man looking and feeling his best no matter how high the temperature gets.

#1: Stave off sun damage.

I know, we have all heard this before, but seriously: he needs sunscreen, too.

It is not only important to wear sunscreen, but to make sure to wear it correctly as well. If he uses too much, he’ll feel greasy and most likely sweat it off; if he doesn’t use enough, it’ll leave his skin vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays. So, how will he know how much to use? As a rule of thumb, use a penny-sized amount for the face and one shot glass-sized squeeze for the body.

As it gets hotter, it is important for him to increase his level of SPF protection, too. Every morning, he should start the day by applying a face moisturizer with a SPF of 20+.

At Boardroom Salon, we recommend Jack Black products for face and skin care. Not only is the line formulated from the finest plant extracts, herbs and healing botanicals – it’s also lightweight and non-greasy.

#2: Exfoliate twice a week.

Exfoliating is one of the easiest ways your guy can combat the sun and give his skin that fresh, clean look. It removes dead skin cells, speeds up cell turnover, minimizes blocked pores, and prevents ingrown hairs caused by shaving.

Exfoliating 2x a week does the trick. Remember that rubbing too hard can cause irritation. He should use his fingertips and rub in a gentle, circular motion while avoiding the eye area, followed by a rinse with warm water.

Last but not least, get him to invest in a quality shaving brush. The brush will exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin, again allowing the razor to get a close cut while also giving skin a healthier look and feel.

#3: Stay hydrated.

We’re not just talking about guzzling H2O here, although that’s unquestionably important, too.

Hydrating the skin with a daily facial moisturizer is a must. It will prevent his face from overproducing oil and being left with a shiny nose and forehead.

Bonus points: Lock in moisture after shaving by applying after-shave balm to the face and neck. Choose one with a blend of moisturizers and essential oils.

#4: Don’t skip out on the hair conditioner.

The elements of summer–sun, chlorine and salt water–can wreak havoc on your man’s hair. A detoxing shampoo can strip away summer’s damage and rid the hair of product residue, pollutants and hard water minerals – however, leave it feeling dry. A conditioner is necessary to keep hair moisturized.Sunday Shampoo

#5: Get haircuts frequently.

The best way to fight frizz and mend damage is with a quality haircut. Regular maintenance can make his hair (and beard if he’s sporting) less uncomfortable during the hottest months.

If he usually schedules a trim every four weeks, this summer make it every three, and keep hair short on the back of the neck. Neck trims are quick and will keep him looking and feeling his best in between cuts.

#6: Experiment with a new trend.

Since summer is always a more casual time, it is a great opportunity to try a new hairstyle. One of our favorite haircuts is called the high and tight. It is great for any kind of hair, which is why we love it!

To get the look, your man’s barber should shave the back and sides with a 1. Then, leave an inch or so on the top. This is a great summer haircut because it gets the hair off of the neck.

Also, this haircut is perfect for men with thinning hair because it gives the illusion of more hair, since the sides are shaved.

To style it, use a dime-sized amount of clay or paste and work it through the hair.
