We love a list and a Best In Dallas list is even better! Today’s list is brought to you by a real-life luchador wrestler. No seriously, we’re not kidding.
Known as ASKI “The Mayan Warrior,” in the industry, he’s been a professional wrestler, actor, entrepreneur, mentor and motivational speaker for 16 years. Dallas-raised, ASKI has made his hometown proud as a champion at world, state and local competitions. When he’s not showing off his wrestling moves at events like tomorrow’s Taco Libre fest at Dallas Farmer’s Market (think tacos, tequila, live music and Lucha Libre wrestling), he’s spending time with his family. A local advocate for education, immigration, equality and bullying programs, ASKI, which means “friend” in old Mayan dialect, has a big heart in and out of the ring. Read on for his Best In Dallas list and join us tomorrow for a day party like no other!
This stylish downtown hotspot serves up tasty bites and cocktails all day. The cocktails aren’t the only thing drawing people in. It’s a “great place to have a cocktail drink and enjoy the environment whether inside or on their outdoor patio,” said ASKI.
“This place always has great galleries and exhibitions that showcase local artist and great workshops for the community,” said ASKI. The Jefferson Ave. center features community events like dance and music classes and houses a gallery/multipurpose room for exhibitions, lectures and other cultural events.
This luchador is an avid reader. Locally, he turns to the creative neighborhood of Deep Ellum for his lit fix. “I love to read and I’m always looking for hidden bookstores [for] selections that you may not find in your typical mainstream books stores.”
On The Move: Oak Cliff Martial Arts
Martial arts is a killer workout and not just for kids. “I started coming to this gym because they offer different fighting styles for all age groups and it’s great to add to my training regimen,” he told us. “The environment and energy that the owners and coaches bring make you feel welcome.”
One of Dallas’ most unique events, Taco Libre, is a must-see. It “showcases Dallas with the best in food (tacos), music and Lucha Libre.” The annual fest is transforming our Farmer’s Market into a hub of Latin flavor.
