Although she sold her iconic namesake brand ten years ago, it seems like we’ve always been familiar with designer Kate Spade and the bright, vintage-inspired feminine designs associated with her name. Kate is making quite the comeback with her new line Frances Valentine, named after her daughter Frances, featuring a quirky array of shoes, handbags and accessories that are just too cute! We were lucky enough to chat with the bubbly designer herself about “chapter two” of her creative career. Read on for the scoop!
After building her namesake brand into a hugely successful international lifestyle brand, the designer left the fashion world behind to become a full-time mommy. After nine years with her kids, Kate is returning with a bang through Frances Valentine! The line is quickly catching the eye of fashionable celebs such as Dakota Johnson and Brooke Shields. She even received what is, in our minds, the perfect accolade this year: being named by Fast Company as one of the “Most Creative People in Business.”
“In my mind, I never really left the industry,” Kate told us. “But after enjoying several years away focusing on family and other initiatives, I felt the time was right to come back to what I love.”
We love how Kate stayed loyal to her brand in regards to the whimsical vibes that we all know and love. Her playful, architectural pieces are available right here in Texas at Malouf’s in Lubbock and Southlake.
“Being true to my design process, I rely on my instincts to guide me on shapes, colors, etc.,” she said. “One whimsical element we incorporated into our shoes was a geodesic heel inspired by Buckminster Fuller, which has now become a signature design element for us.”
The Frances Valentine brand name serves as a nod to both sides of Kate’s family; Frances comes from her father’s side and Valentine from her mother’s. Being a mother herself, Kate’s a natural pro at balancing her professional and family lives.
“It’s important to prioritize things that are important and figure out how they fit into one’s daily life, and I think women approach motherhood in their own unique way that fits into their lifestyle,” she said.
And what advice to Kate have for us?
“Reach for the stars!”
Stop by Malouf’s or shop online to see Kate’s new Frances Valentine goodies! We’re obsessing over the line’s use of metallics, snakeskin embossed leather and marabou pom-poms to boot.
