Dallas-based athletic wear designer Jennifer James is the type of gal who, when faced with a fashion challenge, creates her own solution. Faced with unstylish choices for plus-sized athleisure wear, Jennifer took matters into her own hands and launched a curve-friendly, fashion-forward plus-size label called Active Ego. With an online shop open this September, a runway show in NYC, and successful trunk show complete, the line offers curvy girls trendy bras, leggings, accessories, and apparel tailored to today’s active plus-size woman.
Here at DFW Style Daily, we’re all about empowering women, and that’s what Active Ego is all about! With a goal in mind to liberate women to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle, Jennifer is inspiring those around her to be fearless and flawless. We sat down with the innovative designer to hear about her new line – say bye to active wear that says blah!
DFW Style Daily: What inspired you to start Active Ego?
“I wanted to immediately get back to working out about 2 months after I had my daughter. I was twice the size I was before I had her and my breasts had enlarged to a ‘G’ cup size. It was important for me to find a good sports bra and workout clothes that made me feel and look good. I quickly realized that modern, stylish athleisure wear for plus size women did not exist. Shortly after, I decided that I would design and create my own clothing!”
Why did you call the line Active Ego? Describe the Active Ego customer.
“I feel all women have egos when they are enduring their fitness experience. It is an alter ego. When you look good you tend to feel good and that is the vibe I want women to have when they wear my attire. The customer I design for is considered the ‘Everyday Woman’. She is a size 12+, active, stylish, and expects her active wear to be flexible enough for her to wear the majority of her day.”
How is the Active Ego sports bra different from the rest?
“Our bras are definitely designed to accommodate larger breast sizes that endure medium to high-intensity workouts. All cup sizes have an ego name and definition with each name. Our customers are able to associate themselves with an [alter] ego and not a cup size!”
How did it feel to show the Active Ego line in NYC at the Curvy Revolution Fashion’s Fashion Week?
“It felt amazing! I was so happy to share my collection with the crowd and to be at NYFW doing it was incredible. I received positive feedback and sold out of most of my pieces within 36 hours!”
Do you have a favorite piece from the new collection?
“The sports bras; I have never seen anything like them; the colors/patterns are modern and very chic! I also like the high waist compressing leggings, the materials are of good quality and fit very well.”
What’s next for Active Ego?
“We’re looking to working with major retailers to continue pushing out the brand and our latest products!”
