After following Dallas-based designer Esé Azénabor for years, we’re thrilled to announce that the designer is debuting a new collection next week – one inspired by the dramatic elegance of Venice, Italy. First hitting our radar at a private showcase at Hotel Zaza in 2013, then gracing the runway at her theatrical Phantom at the Runway presentation at downtown’s Fashion Industry Gallery, CBS Radio’s Design & Dine, the first annual Fashion X Dallas, and finally on the New York Fashion Week runway last January, Azénabor has been one busy gal.
With no signs of slowing down, the young designer will debut her Fall/Winter 2016 collection titled “Venetian Dream” and showcase her Spring/Summer 2016 collection this Tuesday, March 29 at the estate of Tricia Sims. Intricate beading and embroidery make this collection a must-see and materials such as silk crepe, silk mesh and silk tulle create a dreamy backdrop for luxury womenswear line. Known for her detailed beading and embroidery work, the designer utilized a combination of Japanese glass beads, sequins and Swarovski crystals in this collection. We sat down with the designer to learn more about this collection and her inspiration behind it. Read on for the scoop!
What was your biggest inspiration behind the “Venetian Dream” collection?
“When I was remodeling my house, I wanted to add a Venetian flair. This [lead to researching] antique Venetian plaster, molding and color schemes. What really captured my attention was the unique detailing in the plaster and molding work. To me, it resembled the unique detailing of embroidery work and beaded patterns.”
Do you have a favorite piece in this collection?
“It’s hard to choose a favorite piece – it’s like asking to pick out a favorite child. However, I will say this collection is my favorite so far. I love gold bead work and I can wear black in any season. These two things are very common in this collection.”
How is this collection different from your past collections?
“This collection almost reminds me of our first collection in 2012 only because of the color scheme. It is still different because it is 100% hand made.”
Do you have any advice for young upcoming designers in Dallas and beyond?
“Be true to yourself and your art. Understand your buyer, and if this is your true passion, never give up.”
What’s next for the Esé Azénabor line?
“We just bought our first building that will [soon] be the Esé Azénabor Design House located in the Dallas Design District. We are in the middle of construction and we can’t wait to share the details!”
Seen on the NYFW runway, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection (shown in the second two images above) will also be showcased again at the event with over 50 looks walking the runway. Carmen Surgent will co-host the evening alongside Tricia Sims and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated in support of the local foundation, Ally’s Wish. Tickets can be purchased here.
“The exciting thing about being a designer in Dallas is the people; the support we have received since we launched our line has been overwhelmingly amazing,” said Azénabor of designing in the Big D. “We really feel like Dallas has welcomed our brand into their arms and we wouldn’t be where we are today without our supporters and fans.”
