Who doesn’t love a list? Today, our exclusive series returns with more Big D insider finds and favorites from a talented “creatist,” concierge, and curator of beautiful things.
Providing unprecedented access to personalized craftsmanship, Wendi McGowan-Ellis offers art collectors a rare commodity – influence over the creative process. “My clients are art lovers who are tired of being kept at arms length from the artist; they want input into the pieces they purchase,” she explains, revealing her penchant for eclectic, treasured goods for better homes and wardrobes.
As the Founder of Wendistry.com, McGowan-Ellis offers a platform for shared artistic experiences, in addition to showcasing her talents as a commissioned painter and handbag designer, who helps others to “adorn differently.” Transitioning seamlessly between commissioned works on canvas and capsule collections, her diverse, sartorial treasures reflect a common commitment to collaboration. Now, the self-described “chief creatist, curator, and concierge” has blended her bespoke expertise and ingenious perspective, to deliver a definitively tasteful local list. Read on for more.
Foodie Favorite: Wendi is a regular at Frisco’s eight|11 after recently moving north, but has a long-standing, indulgent affair with The Place at Perry’s in Uptown. “I fell in love with the restaurant, and their pineapple-coconut carrot cake – when I began dating my husband,” she admitted. “They later commissioned me to paint the interior art for the Gables location, and it still takes my breath away to know they’re my creations!”
Go-To Boutique: “I’m an avowed ‘digital diva,’ so I collect online to avoid the predictability and parking of retail shopping,” noted the creatist. “When I really want to adorn differently, my top stops are United Nude for shoes and Tyler-based Alex & Afton Vintedge for frocks — because both have hard-to-find pieces you’re unlikely to see on anyone else!”
Artistic Addiction: Noting an affinity for the obvious in artistic expression, Wendi stays ultra-fixated on gilded goods. “I’m constantly in search of high-quality hues. Golden paints are my current go-to, and a rainbow of colors already covers my workspace and the denim overalls I work in. My enduring sources for great shades are Jerry’s Artarama and Asel Art Supply.”
Best Buys: “For fashion finds, I’m completely obsessed with shopping via Instagram’s ‘liketoknow.it,’ which was founded by a Dallas girl (Amber Venz), and I adore décor from the vintage boutique at One Kings Lane. Since I’m also addicted to beauty products, I’m a Dermstore fanatic, and I keep my physician-grade favorites on auto-ship,” the artist enthused.
I Heart Dallas: Citing the Stoneleigh Hotel as a must for date-night drinks, the newlywed elaborated on her go-to daytime destinations, adding, “The art galleries, interior design shops, and furniture companies in the Design District are an infinite source of creative inspiration and motivation, and I never miss an opportunity to stop by and soak up new ideas for more beautiful bags and paintings.”
