Fashion Hits the Big Screen: Dior and I & Iris to Show at Dallas’ USA Film Festival

The 45th annual USA Film Festival is headed to Dallas, bringing two fashion and style documentaries to the big screen that are already generating nationwide buzz. Landing at the Angelika Film Center April 22 – 26, the festival itself will attract thousands of movie buffs, film-makers, and artistic creatives for five-day screenings of full-length features, narrative shorts, and documentaries.

Creating quite a stir within the fashion world, are the showings of two critically acclaimed films: Dior and I, and IRIS. Both conceptually centered around fashion and style, the USA Film Festival tapped the shoulder of Dallas' darling fashion maven Jan Strimple, to host on-stage conversations with both Dior and I director Frederic Tcheng and Iris Apfel of IRIS. Read on to get more scoop on these showings.

Dior and I April 23, 7:15PM Already raved as one of the “best fashion films ever,” Dior and I ushers viewers behind the scenes of the iconic Christian Dior fashion house. Captivating and intriguing, the newly released film gives an intimate portrayal at the creation of Raf Simons’ inaugural haute couture collection, as he steps into his role as the new artistic director for the brand. Highlighting scenes of pressure, highs and lows -- the film pays a fascinating homage to the many artisans and seamstresses who helped to bring Simons’ vision to life – all within a short eight-week period.

Dior and I Director Frederic Tcheng will be in attendance at the screening with Jan Strimple (pictured above) hosting the on-stage conversation for the film. Citing her personal involvement with the Dior label, Strimple comments, “In the mid through late 80's, I walked for Marc Bohan at Christian Dior – for both Haute Couture and Pret-a-Porter. I therefore have a very personal appreciation of the history of the House of Dior. I was delighted to be invited to [host], as it’s a pleasure to give the public a glimpse into this very rarified world.”

IRIS April 24, 7:15PM In case you didn’t know, Iris Apfel is a big deal. A really big deal. The 93-year old trendsetter hits the big screen in this documentary directed by filmmaker Al Maysles. A deservedly praised style icon, Apfel is notorious for her overly flamboyant style of dress, quick-witted humor, and free spirit. Growing up in middle-class Queens during the Great Depression, the documentary showcases Apfel’s intense work ethic leading into the abundant lifestyle she unapologetically showcases today. Even at an advanced age, Apfel continues to inspire many, reminding all “that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment.” “I feel lucky to be working,” the style maven notes. “If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.” Even Strimple gleams in the utmost admiration for Apfel, as she is also scheduled to host the on-stage conversation with the style-savvy character. “When I grow up, I hope to be just like her,” Strimple admits. “She’s unapologetic about the role fashion has played in her life and repels the notion of blending. She’s a risk-taking, gutsy original who has my deepest admiration. Love her!”   Advance tickets for both Dior and I & Iris can be purchased through TicketMaster up until April 20. After April 20, tickets must be purchased (cash only) at the door. For more information, visit USAFilmFestival.com.
