On Saturday, September 6, a striking international crowd fêted the opening of the newest Toni & Guy Academy at 1921 Preston Road in Plano. The dual celebration also marked thirty-plus years in the Metroplex for the brand, specializing in cutting edge cut and color.
As guests mixed and mingled over cool Chardonnay and sweet treats from Fluffpop Gourmet Cotton Candy, models catwalked in hairstyles ranging from everyday chic to avant garde. Toni & Guy’s signature color creations delighted, prismatic against the backdrop of an all-white wardrobe request. The high-energy event gave a glimpse of what’s to come for both students and clients in this innovative new space.
Founded in England in 1963, Toni & Guy made its way stateside in 1984, quickly establishing a reputation for fashion-forward and ever-evolving cutting, coloring, and hair styling techniques. With the debut of the first Toni & Guy Academy here in North Texas in 1990, CEO Bruno Mascolo and Founding Director Paul Joseph Marzioli reached a new generation of stylists through cosmetology education. Today, a total of 24 academies operate in 14 states.
Mascolo, dapper behind his ever-present shades, was in attendance for the September 6 debut of his newest academy, along with Toni & Guy team leaders from various European and U.S. capitals. We sat down with the patriarch, along with nephew Zak Mascolo, Creative Director of the Americas, to discuss what sets the Toni & Guy experience apart.
“It is essential that we reinvent ourselves all the time,” Bruno Mascolo explained of his company philosophy. The declaration applies to both Toni & Guy stylists and the clients they serve. “We love our profession, and we [aim to] upgrade the hairdressing industry throughout America.”
For students of the new Toni & Guy Academy, this translates to a curriculum that goes beyond teaching to the state board cosmetology licensing test. Aspiring stylists are guided by professional instructors at Toni & Guy academies, with a focus on building confidence and cultivating creativity. The Mascolo family also promotes a proactive approach to building client lists and maximizing earning potential.
When it comes to salon and academy clients, creativity plays a key role again. New cutting techniques, for example, are introduced on a regular basis. Beyond mere trims and highlights, Toni & Guy is known for unexpected shapes, tones, and conceptual styles.
Even if cutting-edge hair doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, Zak Mascolo concluded by urging us all to think outside the basic bob. The Creative Director’s greatest hope for Toni & Guy clients? Try a new ‘do, just for you. He observes, “I wish so many people didn’t have to rely on someone famous to try [a hairstyle] first.”
