UCR ‘Retail As Art’ Student Photography Contest Names 2014 Winners

On Wednesday, April 9, the 6th Annual United Commercial Realty (UCR) ‘Retail As Art’ Photography Scholarship Contest culminated in the award of over $11,000 to Dallas-area students. Winners captured the beauty in both exceptional and everyday retail settings.

1st Prize: Abigail Chang, “Lobster Dinner” (The Einstein School)

Established in 2008, a showcase of the true essence of Dallas-Fort Worth retail and a celebration of emerging artistic talent are at the heart of this yearly competition. Says Mickey Ashmore, UCR President and CEO, “It is a blessing to be able to reach out to students and support their talent, challenge their creativity, enrich their retail and art education, and reward the top talent. It’s such a pleasure to see the outstanding results, both in terms of the photographs produced and the benefits received by all involved.”

2nd Prize: Thomas Molash, “Parallelism” (Cistercian Preparatory School)

Hundreds of photographs from schools across the Metroplex were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges earlier this year. The panel included Dallas Morning News photographer Evans Caglage, CultureMap Dallas Senior Editor Teresa Gubbins, DFW Style Daily Editor Lisa Petty, designer Bernard Underwood of An Intimate Place, Wade Griffith of Wade Griffith Photography, and SWOON the Studio founder and Creative Director Sam Sano.

3rd Prize: Ashley Andrews, “Metallic Utensils” (Booker T. Washington)

After much difficult deliberation, three winners were selected, and an official scholarship presentation and exhibition took place at 129Leslie on the evening of Wednesday, April 9. The 2014 UCR ‘Retail As Art’ Photography Scholarship Contest Winners include: 1st Place - Abigail Chang (The Einstein School); 2nd Place - Thomas Molash (Cistercian Preparatory School); 3rd Place - Ashley Andrews (Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts). Each winner’s work is featured herein. From all of us at DFW Style Daily, a big congratulations to this year’s winners.
