For over 3,000 years, luxurious, luminous textiles have represented affluence and refined taste. Traveling from east to west in ancient times, fabrics woven with golden thread, and those resembling marble or rippling water, hinted at the vast opulence of faraway lands.
Emerging in the 20th century, warp-faced yarns of silk, synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyester, and even cotton could be manipulated to produce a reflective sheen. What was once a luxury for only the very rich can now add a touch of glamour to the everyday wardrobe.
This season, fabrics that shine are alternately sensuous and sporty. Iridescent hues and versatile shapes are executed in fabrics that dazzle. Appropriate for dawn to dusk dressing, below we’ll take a look at designer runway inspiration and a couple of high-gloss buy-it-now bargains.
