Dallas Painter Alex Matthews Turns Fashion Into Art
Inspired by stylish forms both real-life and dream-like, one local artist’s collectible works recently caught our eye. Original watercolors by Alex Matthews are the ideal gift for fashion-lovers. And best of all, they can be customized.
A TCU grad, Matthews elected to remain in the Metroplex after college, rather than returning to her native Northern California. Desiring to start a small business to supplement her first entry into the workforce, she drew upon a talent handed down through the generations. Matthews learned to paint as a girl at her grandmother’s side. Now, through her AEM Designs, the young artist creates original skylines, abstracts, and – our favorites – fashion watercolors.
When queried about her personal style, Matthews proves to be a true Cali girl at heart. “I’m very relaxed,” she explains. “I like things that are girly, but not too girly.” Her art, however, expresses a range of aesthetics, from a chic model in a ‘50s-inspired frock to whimsical, candy-colored shoes.
Matthews believes her art is ideal for display in the dorms or first apartments of young women such as herself. We agree, and her custom watercolors expand on her target market. For a reasonable fee, Matthews will transform a picture of a loved item from your own closet into an original work of art. That’s right – your favorite platforms can now become your favorite painting.
Most prints are created in 8” x 10” or 11” x 14” size, priced from $25. Larger sizes are also available. Custom fashion watercolors are priced individually, and can be completed in about a week. For more information, visit AEM Designs at Etsy.
