Growing up, my dad used to say I was the only vegetarian who didn’t like vegetables. And no, this wasn’t because I was a fruitarian. Rather, I was born with an overly developed sweet tooth, perhaps passed down from my great-grandmother who thought one should always eat dessert first. Her theory, when put to practice by a younger me, left little room for anything else.


I’ve come a long way since then, though, and my views on vegetables (and my sweet tooth) have evolved!





Speaking of coming – and going – a long way, I lived on shooting stars for more than a few years. As a result of frequent work travel around the globe, I’ve grown to really appreciate the journey, not just my destination. From local favorite eateries to farmers markets, each of the places I visited helped me overcome my distaste for veggies (even Brussels sprouts). Certainly, it’s been the catalyst for my evolution, and these days you’ll find me cooking with all kinds of delicious fruits and vegetables.


Undoubtedly, food is one of my favorite subjects, and singlehandedly has the greatest impact on our overall health and glow. So, in the spirit of summer travel and all the journeys along the way, please meet a few of my favorite regional experts. From farm to shower, their easy, natural recipes will prep you from the inside out and get you glowing in no time!

Expert: Nicolas Torrent, Los Angeles


Recipe: Summer Sip For Glowing Skin

  • Aloe Vera
  • 1 Medium Cucumber
  • 6 oz. Pineapple Juice
  • 6 oz. Coconut Water
  • Juice Of 1 Lemon
  • Fresh Mint Leaves

Filet about 1/4 of an Aloe Vera leaf (preferably the bottom-wider end). Place in a blender with remaining ingredients and a handful of fresh mint leaves. Blend to desired consistency. For a sweeter sip, add a few pitted Medjool dates.


If You Go: Between the beaches, trails, and driving in Los Angeles, you’ll get hungry. Try my favorites, including M.A.K.E. in Santa Monica, Venice Beach’s Moon Juice, and the Santa Monica Downtown Farmers Market on Wednesdays.

Recipe: Spray-On Mist For Summer Highlights

  • 6 oz. Filtered Water
  • 15 Drops Chamomile Oil
  • Juice of 1 Lemon

Fill an 8 oz. spray bottle with approximately 6 oz. filtered water. Add 15 drops of chamomile oil and the juice of one lemon. Before heading out into the sun, spray a fine mist over all hair. For an on-trend ombré look, spray only on the ends of hair strands and around the face. Light brown and dark-to-medium blonde hair tones will produce the best results. Mix a fresh batch of spray for each use.


If You Go: Whether walking, biking, riding the subway, or even taking cabs, the constant state of motion in NYC means you’ll need to re-energize. Try my favorites like the Green Alien Smoothie at NoLita’s Siggy’s Good Food, East Village’s Lula’s Apothecary, Hu Kitchen in Greenwich Village, and Fulton Stall Market at the South Street Seaport.

Recipe: Smooth Salve For Summer Romance-Ready Hands

  • 1 T. Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 3 T. Shea Butter
  • 1 T. German Chamomile Hydrosol
  • 3 Drops Neroli Oil

For best results, keep all ingredients at room temperature. Mash together the Coconut Oil and Shea Butter. Add the German Chamomile, and mix to a smooth cream. Once smooth, add in 3 drops of Neroli Oil. Apply generously to hands, feet, elbows, and legs. Store in a glass jar up to six months.


If You Go: A day at a Florida beach or park can take it out of you, but you’ll want a snack that keeps you swimsuit ready. My favorites include Experiment C at Juice Lab in Winter Park, Christopher’s Kitchen in Palm Beach, or Miami’s Glaser Organic Farms on Saturdays.

Recipe: Scrub For Summer-Perfect Skin

  • ¼ Cup Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
  • ½ Cup Sugar or Salt

In a shower-safe container, mix sugar or salt (organic and vegan preferred) with Coconut Oil (Dr. Bronner’s preferred). Mix thoroughly and apply generously in a circular motion all over the body, avoiding the face. Store away from water, and stir to re-combine ingredients before each use.


If You Go: My Prius Charlie and I sure do get around the Dallas area. If you live here, or are lucky enough to visit, head to Kristian and my favorites like Bolsa, Plano’s Whiskey Cake, and Number One in Highland Park Village.
