Nancy Upton’s exploration of the local shopping scene for girls with real curves continues today. Read on for the details of her surprising visit to Torrid at Town East Mall.
Let’s just say Nancy didn’t see this one coming.
I’ll admit I was nervous in the days leading up to my visit to Torrid. This national chain is owned by Hot Topic, known for hipster band t-shirts, novelty gift items, and giving Goth kids a place to hang out after school. I imagined walking into our local outpost at Town East Mall to find full-figured teens talking about Twilight while preening in dark eyeliner and head-to-toe black outfits.
I was so very, very wrong.
Catering to young women in sizes 12-26, Torrid is a well-stocked and fashionable store, filled with classic pieces and affordable on-trend styles. Little black dress and classic boyfriend blazer you can wear for years? Achieved. Fun leather shorts and leopard print top you’ll thrift after this season? They’ve got those, too.
Plaid Cape ($88.50), Halter Dress ($49.98), Cropped Faux Leather Jacket ($78.50)
Regarding trends, they’re a major issue in the plus-sized world. It’s easy to fall far behind what’s currently walking off the runways and into department stores when that clothing isn’t available in your size. Torrid has done an excellent job of stocking what’s popular this winter – namely animal prints, leather, and textured tights.
In addition to the trendiest plus-size selections I’ve ever seen in one location, Torrid also carries the little extras, and a wide selection of shoes. I spied boots, sandals, flats, pumps, and wedges. You want hosiery? Torrid has tights, leggings, socks, knee-highs, and fishnets. There’s also a lingerie section featuring everything from cotton day-of-the-week briefs to frilly special occasion undies (wink, wink). Most are gently priced at three for $21.
For myself, I picked up a pair of vintage-inspired knit black tights for just $10, which I immediately wore to the FGI Night of Stars Gala.
Moving on, jeans are always a sticking point for the female shopper, no matter her size or style. Torrid has an entire wall of denim, featuring different washes, cuts, and fabrics that are styled to fit and flatter. Many pairs are priced around the $50 mark.
The employees at this Mesquite Town East location (there are additional locations in Frisco and Fort Worth) were incredibly friendly and fashion-forward. I witnessed them offer women honest, confidence-building advice and opinions. They were also well-versed in current store sales and promotions.
Speaking of which, shoppers can earn a $25 gift card for every $50 they spend until the second week of December.
To recap, you can buy almost any wardrobe item that you need from Torrid. There’s something to suit just about every young woman’s style, from the most edgy to the pretty and demure girl next door. Well priced, beautifully-designed, and figure-friendly, I call this store a smashing success.
