Following a lackluster late summer collab with Karl Lagerfeld, Macy’s has stepped up its designer collection game. Abby Gregory reviews Giambattista Valli’s new line, after the jump.
After scoping out the Giambattista Valli for Impulse collection at Macy’s, we’re prepared to use the L-word.
Leopard, that is. And lots of it.
Valli let his animal instincts run wild when designing these looks, to (mostly) positive end result. While the overall feel of the collection lacks general direction, it does represent an improvement in wearability over the retailer’s last collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld. We ultimately concluded that the Chanel designer’s much-hyped line was a missed opportunity, but many of these new Valli items are worth snapping up.
Among the standouts, our top picks include a black petal skirt ($100) and a puffed-sleeve leopard dress ($139). The charmingly unfinished skirt has a couture feel, and the body-con dress would look right at home on a red carpet.
On the flip side, however, we recommend you avoid the juvenile and taste-free animal print tops, as well as any of the one-shoulder frocks. Dated and boring, they represent the low points in the collection.
