As with fellow Under the Radar designer Shawn Florence, Merrick Bean caught our eye at last summer’s auditions for NBC’s Fashion Star reality show. As she presented a selection of accessory designs to the judges’ panel, we were struck by the contrast of sweet Southern blonde and major statement jewelry.

With further exploration, we found that this juxtaposition is at the core of Merrick’s work. So many of her pieces combine elements both unstructured and refined. A layered necklace, for example, pairs jagged rock crystals with a polished gold chain. An oversized choker features multiple mis-matched floral clusters, taking a delicate motif into daring territory.

This look stands apart from many others in the crowd, as today’s market is flooded with generic, delicate gems. Sure, there’s a place in the fashion world for tiny charms, but to make a real statement, a new designer must think outside the typical (jewelry) box.

As Merrick herself puts it, “My pieces are bold, with tastefulness in mind. They are not trend conscious, but they are pieces that make the outfit.”

Looking back, this young designer’s career started at the age of just 15, when she began selling handmade creations to high school friends and neighbors in her community. Fast forward to today, and Merrick’s self-named line has been featured in publications such as 360 West and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Panache Magazine. She is also a vendor at the quarterly Dallas Flea.

With her work now available at several retailers in Fort Worth, as well in Austin, Houston, and St. Louis, Merrick’s next goal is representation in a Big D boutique.

In closing, we’ll leave you with the designer’s description of her ideal customer:  “My client is confident, and likes to represent herself through what she wears. She knows what she likes when she sees it, and she never apologizes for being herself.”

With that in mind, we invite you to explore the following gallery of select Merrick Bean jewelry. Visit MerrickJewels.com for additional products and store locations.
